How many inventions will your team Rescue with the Invention Triage™ process?

You already know that it’s important to protect your inventions just like you would any other valuable business asset.

Patents that protect important inventions are vital to your company because they provide a competitive advantage, protect your inventions from being stolen, and increase the valuation of your business.

I hate being the bearer of bad news and telling you that it’s too late to patent that critical invention.

But, that’s what happens if you don’t meet important patent filing deadlines established by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

For example, if you disclose an invention publicly or sell a product containing the invention, those activities trigger a 12-month patent filing deadline.  In some situations, merely offering to sell a product that contains your invention triggers the 12-month deadline.

If you don’t file a patent application for the invention within 12 months, you forfeit the ability to protect the invention with a patent.

So, if you talk to me 13 months after a public disclosure or offer to sell a product with the invention, I have to give you the bad news: I’m sorry, but it’s too late to patent your invention.

Fortunately, there’s a solution to forfeiting your patent protection.

The solution is my Invention Triage™ process.

The Invention Triage process identifies inventions that may be at risk due to the 12-month patent filing deadline and other potential deadlines that prevent protection of the invention.  These at-risk inventions need immediate attention.

The Invention Triage process is important for any company building a patent portfolio, especially if it has been several months (or longer) since your team identified or evaluated new inventions.

If your business team creates new products that contain inventions, the Invention Triage process is a top priority for your business.

“Steve is an excellent intellectual property lawyer. We’ve worked with Steve over the past 20 years and continue to work with him. He is a quick study. In the course of just one meeting, he understands the core concepts of what we are trying to protect. Steve is easy and fun to work with!”

Dilip Venkatachari
Board Director, SageX Solutions

For more than 20 years, I have helped engineering and development teams find gold nuggets of invention that were previously undiscovered. These are often critical inventions that provide significant protection and high value to the company.

As an engineer myself (in addition to being an intellectual property attorney), I can lead your product development teams to identify the key inventions in your products and systems. Finding just one “hidden” invention can substantially increase your company valuation.

My engineering background allows me to communicate with your engineering and development team. I can quickly understand your technology and build rapport with your team.

In my experience, I’ve seen many development teams overlook inventions that, in hindsight, seem obvious. In reality, those overlooked inventions are often the company’s most valuable ideas that need patent protection. I know how to ask the right questions and dig into your products to uncover your critical inventions.

During the Invention Triage process, I will meet with your team to:

  • Identify at-risk inventions that need fast action – including the critical inventions your team may have missed
  • Evaluate the at-risk inventions using criteria specific to your company
  • Identify the most valuable inventions to protect
  • Create a plan to quickly protect the most valuable inventions

“After working with numerous attorneys, I was fortunate to be introduced to Steve Sponseller. What a difference. Steve became an integral team member of our technical staff. He does his homework and possesses the ability to quickly interpret a specific technology or invention in terms of intellectual property value.”

Marketta Silvera
Silicon Valley CEO/Chairman

For more than 20 years, Steve Sponseller has worked with hundreds of technology companies and more than 1000 inventors. He has experience with numerous technologies and all types of businesses – from small startups to large corporations. Steve is the author of Cracking the Patent Code and his articles are regularly featured in Entrepreneur and other publications.

Even if you have filed some patent applications, don’t assume that you have fully protected all of your most valuable inventions.

Without a periodic analysis of your new developments, critical inventions may slip through the cracks and become free for your competitors to use in their own products.

Don’t postpone this important activity.  You may have at-risk inventions that need immediate attention.
